If you really miss World of Warcraft back in 2007, then Burning Crusade Classic is for you. It’s exactly that: An expansion to World of Warcraft Classic that mimics what it was like to first step through the Dark Portal and enter the shattered world of Outland more than a decade ago. This is where players will battle iconic WoW villains like Illidan, Kael’Thas, and all the nerds in the opposing faction who race to level 70 and get mounts flying before you just so they can ambush and repeatedly gank you for hours on end. Oh, what a fun time.
But Burning Crusade Classic won’t be exactly what it used to be, either. Unlike WoW Classic, Blizzard made some pretty drastic changes this time around. Don’t worry, because everything you need to know about Burning Crusade Classic is right here.
When will Burning Crusade Classic launch?
When Blizzard revealed the Burning Crusade Classic at BlizzCon 2021, it confirmed that the expansion was coming later this year. Yup, it was release on June 1, 2021.
How much does it cost?
Like WoW Classic, Burning Crusade Classic is included in the monthly World of Warcraft subscription, which is $15. You don’t have to pay extra — unless you want to buy level ups or clone your character so you can continue playing on vanilla servers.
So, what’s the deal with The Burning Crusade?
The Burning Crusade is WoW’s first expansion, so obviously that’s a big deal. By today’s standards, I think The Burning Crusade is WoW’s worst expansion. Like Classic, it’s a holdover from a different time when MMOs were much more difficult to access and more demanding on your free time. These are very different games to modern WoW, but on the other hand they also do a much better job of forcing players to socialize and work together. Classics is all about stepping back in time, and, like WoW Classic, Burning Crusade’s many rough edges will be what people love the most. But if you’ve been playing WoW Classic and having fun, Burning Crusade Classic is going to be great.
Here are some things to look forward to:
- Level cap raised to 70
- A new continent to explore with some beautiful and memorable areas
- Flying mount
- Some of the best attacks in WoW history
- A much more focused PVP experience with the addition of an arena
- Two new races: Blood elves and Draenei
- Horde players can play paladins and Alliance players can play shaman
How does it work?
This is where the problem gets a little tricky. Let’s see, Burning Crusade Classic and WoW Classic (which remake WoW as it was in 2006) will actually be two separate games. It’s up to you, which one you want to play. When Burning Crusade Classic launches later this year, each player will decide whether they want to continue to the Burning Crusade era or stay in the Classic era, where the level limit is 60. All current WoW Classic servers will continue to Burning Crusade, while players who wish to those who stay on Classic will be moved to a new set of vanilla servers where they can continue to play WoW Classic. Blizzard has also confirmed that, for a fee, you can clone characters so you can play them on WoW Classic and Burning Crusade Classic servers. This will basically just be a copy of your original character.
Apart from that, Burning Crusade Classic will work the same way as WoW Classic does. This expansion will be broken up into phases that loosely resemble the live updates Burning Crusade originally received in 2007. Every few months, Blizzard will launch a new phase and introduce new attacks, dungeons, and features to simulate what it was like to play back in the day.
Did you mention Blizzard made changes too?
That’s right. Although WoW Classic was originally a faithful remake of 2006-era WoW, Burning Crusade Classic made some improvements to try and cater to a more modern audience. So while most of it will be the Burning Crusade you remember back from 2007, some things will be different.
Here’s what you should know:
Since WoW Classic raiders are too good, Blizzard will be using the nerfed version of the Burning Crusade raid boss. This means that attacks in Burning Crusade Classic will be more difficult because the boss will deal more damage and have more HP.
Alliance paladins will gain access to the Seal of Blood, originally only for Horde paladins. This was because the Seal of Blood was better than the Alliance version, so this was done to maintain the balance of the factions.
Arena matchmaking is being overhauled to make it more accessible and in line with modern experiences. This includes a lot of changes, but one of the biggest ones is that arena teams will be able to have substitutes that can sign in if someone can’t get in and play. That’s a nice change for PvPers.
The Group Search tool originally included in War will be modernized. Don’t worry, it won’t perform automatic matchmaking the way Dungeon Finder does in modern WoW. But it will have better functionality so you can find people to group with a little easier.
What if you don’t have a level 60 character ready when Burning Crusade Classic launches?
Good news: Blizzard is selling a one-time character level up. This will let dirty casuals jump into the Dark Portal without first grinding a level 60 character in WoW Classic. However, there are some limitations. Boost is not meant as a way to get past the level grind but to help players catch up with their friends or tourists who just want a quick nostalgia fix. It’s still unknown how much it costs, but here’s how it works:
- You can’t upgrade Draenei or blood elf characters
- You can only buy a boost once per account
- Boost only works on Burning Crusade Classic, not WoW Classic
